Friday Flash

Hello Families,

One more week until break! This year is flying by and it’s a little hard to believe 2024 is almost done. Many students are looking forward to not having schoolwork for a couple of weeks but we hope they are ready to learn again come January 🙂

Wishing each one of you a blessed Christmas and peaceful holiday season!

Mrs. Atherton

This Coming Week

  • Wed Dec 18 – 6:00 pm – Christmas program. Students need to arrive at 5:30 and meet in their homerooms. Please see note going home today for more details.
  • Thu Dec 19 – Deadline for ordering hot lunches for Jan/Feb. Please put your orders in here.
  • Fri Dec 20 – Noon dismissal. There will be regular bussing in the morning out to school but only one bus back to town at lunch time. If at all possible, we encourage parents to come pick their kids up at noon to help manage the gifts, food, and locker clean out.

Looking Ahead

  • Jan 6 – First day back to school
  • Jan 24 – Bear Mtn Ski day
  • Jan 31 – Non-instructional day

Good to Know

  • Most of you participated in our survey regarding school on days when busses are cancelled – thank you! Our board reviewed the results and have decided to keep the current policy as 85% of you are ok or happy with it. However, the majority of you are willing to coordinate learning with students at home for the day so we will put plans in place to communicate learning expectations for the next day when busses are cancelled.
  • We value and need input from our community! In January, we will be doing a school-wide survey about our overall culture for students, parents, and staff. This helps us know what we are doing well and what areas we need to focus on for changes. All responses will be anonymous. Please see the attached letters for more details or if you do not want your child to participate.

Shout Outs

  • To our parents volunteering for the holiday shop. Our students have been busy buying gifts for their loved ones today. Thank you to all who supported this event!
  • To Uzziah, Joey, Ethan C, Hannah, Alana, Fiona, Angelique and Summer for showing Bravery in the month of November!

  • We are so proud of our junior flag football teams! We recently learned that both our teams received the Sportsmanship Award for their pool at the flag football tournament in Kelowna. To have both our B and C teams be top of the tournament for who they are, says a lot about you as parents, our program, and who our students are becoming. We are grateful to Mr. Atherton and Miss V for helping coach them into great citizens! And a shout-out to Lakeview Christian School who joined our teams and were part of this award.
  • We are glad our senior volleyball students had a safe trip to Burman University for the tournament and enjoyed themselves while away.

No School Today

Dear Families,

We regret to inform you that there is no school today. Busses are canceled due to bad road conditions. Please let us know if you need childcare assistance and we will have a staff member to help.

We recognize we have had school cancelled more often this winter so far. We understand this is difficult for families and are concerned about learning missed if this trend continues. We will be reviewing our policy and what our options are to best support our students and families.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mrs. Atherton

No School Today (Tues)

Families, we will not be holding school today as busses are cancelled for poor road conditions and most of our families rely on our bussing to attend school. If your children require childcare and you need assistance, please reach out to their home room teacher. Take care out there!

  • We have two funds from the BC government to support families: Feeding Futures and Family Affordability Fund. Our school has been assigned a specific amount to use for our students/families. These funds are intended to support families in accessing food and programs that would be difficult to access otherwise. You will see the option to opt into these funds for various food orders and school programs, hopefully throughout the school year as funds last.

  • To Mr. Atherton, Miss V and Mrs. Neumann for supporting our students’ trip/participation in the football tournament.

Verse of the Week – Deuteronomy 31:6

"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you."

*PS

We know the day after Halloween is extra hard when you’re trying to get your kids up and ready for school. Because dressing a hung-over, raging pterodactyl is not fun. But PLEASE do NOT bribe the groggy goblins with trick or treat candy and send them to school with two fistfuls of Sour Patch Kids and a wish. We the teachers would rather you perform a rolling dropoff in front of the school, spitting a cranky kid in pajamas out of the Odyssey than pushing a feral hyperglycemic werewolf into the doors of the school fresh off a continuous three day sugar bender. Put down the sucker.

Your duty on November 1st is to send them to school with bed head and a buttered biscuit in whatever mood has taken over. We will detox them off the red dye and artificial flavours and send them back to you at 2:30. We ride at dawn.

  • Our Gr 5-8 sleep-in was a success and we saw the wonderful Northern Lights together.
  • If Standard Bus cancels Chetwynd busses throughout this winter season (due to unsafe road conditions or extreme cold), we will not have school. Messaging usually goes out by email, Bloomz accounts, and on social media.
